WARNING! Saving Lives Has Never Been So Much FUN!

Ian Hutchinson (‘Hutch’) knows what it’s like to be dead. In 2018, while out bike riding with his mate Don MacKee, he died, and remained clinically dead for 19 long minutes!

Unlike 91% of those who suffer a sudden cardiac arrest, Ian was fortunate to survive, thanks to Don and some quick thinking good Samaritan bystanders CPR skills.

Hutch regarded himself as very fit and healthy, and apart from being a three-time Ironman triathlete (get over it, that was many years ago), he walked his dog Marcy each morning and went on bike rides or to the gym most days. He’d never smoked and rarely drank alcohol.

In September 2018, while bike riding with long-time mate Don MacKee, he became one of the lucky only 9% to survive an out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest.

Giving a Second Chance

Following his recovery, Don & Hutch founded CPRfriendly.org in memory of, and on behalf of, the 91% less fortunate that don’t survive. To help turn those statistics around, they are, through CPRfriendly.org, (a NSW Community Service Award winner) on a quest to get everyone CPR friendly and have more access to public defibrillators.

Personal, Practical & Packed Full-of-Fun

Don & Hutch uniquely share their personal life-saving experience between them in a practical, but full-of-fun way that includes:

  • Personal life-saving & life-changing stories

  • Practical, quick & easy CPR skills

  • Creating good outcomes out of bad situations

  • Time-effective & productive defibrillator awareness

99% of Australian’s say that CPR is a vital life skill, but only 26% are CPR friendly.

With 25,000 sudden cardiac arrest deaths in our country each year some would say that it’s a community necessity for each and every one of us to take a few minutes to ensure we know how we can respond to a challenge and help save a life with CPR.

Ian Hutchinson, a fit and healthy cyclist was one of the only 9% to survive a sudden cardiac arrest last year, aged 55. Thanks to the quick actions of his cycling mate, and some proactive first responders who knew CPR skills Ian, 2019 Premier’s Community Service Award recipient, is lucky to be with us today.

Surviving a Cardiac Arrest – Creating good things out of bad

Ian Hutchinson & Don Mackee

Just over 12 months ago, while out on his regular weekly bike ride around Narrabeen Lagoon with his mate, 55 year old father Ian Hutchinson had a sudden cardiac arrest and was clinically dead for 19 minutes. ‘Hutch’ was fit & healthy with no heart risk factors whatsoever, and thanks to the quick thinking action of his cycling mate Donald MacKee and some good samaritan CPR bystanders, 000 was called, CPR commenced and Ian became one of the very lucky 9% to survive a sudden cardiac arrest.

To help start saving more lives in Australia, mates for close to 20 years Don & Hutch will share their unlikely experience between them of being a sudden cardiac arrest survivor and a CPR rescuer and share their:

  • Personal life-changing story

  • Real life emergency 000 phone call audio and lessons learnt

  • Practical, quick & easy CPR skills that everyone can do (with a fun twist)

How a simple street get together could save our families lives.

Kindly hosted by Noel & Pauline Carroll this event was enthusiastically attended by over 50 local community members with training supported by Tony Tier (Manly Surf Club) and Guy Leech (Heart180). 70% of sudden cardiac arrests happen at home with family members, so this local community now has access to their own defibrillator to help save the lives of loved ones.

CPR friendly Street Party

After the success of our first CPR friendly BBQ, we organised a similar CPR Friendly Street Party giving our local community the opportunity to enhance their CPR skills in a fun environment while also raising funds for their very own street Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

A CPR Friendly Street Party is a great way to bring the street and locals together. It revitalises the community spirit in a fun but socially concise way to help create a heart smart street, with the added option of raising funds for a street defibrillator. Typically hosted at a resident’s home, driveway, local public park, community centre or surf club these casual events ideally run for 90 minutes, which includes a 30-60 minute CPR information session. An example might be 4:30pm–6pm on a Sunday afternoon with every household invited to bring a plate and drinks.

Our first CPR friendly Street Party was run in February 2019, with 50 local residents and the kind support of a trainer from Newport Surf Club. Funds for a defibrillator were raised with the AED placed centrally within 3 minutes of everyone in the street. This life-saving emergency device is stored in a weatherproof alarmed storage cabinet for security.
